How were "chinampas" significant during the Aztec civilization?

During this time, lands were already fertile due to the presence of various waterforms. However, they were not sufficient enough to support the increasing population. Therefore, they had to make artificial lands or "chinampas" which would enable the Aztec farmers to plant more crops. With the great contributions of chinampas, there were no more shortages of food because these lands made room for more places to plant crops; hence, increasing the supply of food and having the capacity to feed more individuals.
